In Brief: The Danish Girl

danishgirlCapsuled for the current issue of Empire.

Awards bait bordering on parody, this risible attempt to tell the story of Lili Elbe, one of the world’s earliest visible gender reassignments, tangles with a hot-button issue (trans awareness) and turns her life to a glib middlebrow experience, dripping with the worst kind of gruesome tastefulness. A soggy, quivering Eddie Redmayne gives a please-love-me performance that’ll make you appreciate his turn in the Wachowskis Jupiter Ascending, while Oscar winner Alicia Vikander is very good despite director Tom Hooper’s worst efforts. By the time Elbe is literally reduced to a symbolic scarf on the breeze, the film practically dares you not to howl with laughter.
